Short Circuit

This minisite awaits a maintainer’s check. A model this site has not proven yet worked on it (claude-sonnet-5-5), so a maintainer will measure its listing on one it has (how the check works). It is not complete either: 0 % of the program is explained. Clone https://github.com/gamesexplained/gamesexplained and follow kit/START.md to continue games/c64/short-circuit to Silver.

Part one is one long strip of 256 tiles that you scroll through; part two is a strip of 256 columns with a creature sown along it by a table.

01 · Part one

The whole laboratory, drawn from the tile map

256 columns of 4 by 4 characters, three tiles high: $4000, $4100 and $4200. Scroll sideways; each numbered badge is one of the 21 objects at its column from the table at $1568.

Loading the map from the listing…

Drawn by this page from the listing's bytes: tile numbers, the tiles at $5000, the character set at $D800 and each character's colour from $8448, in the multicolour mode the game uses, with brown and light blue as the two shared colours that the raster handler sets for the playfield. The 40 by 12 characters on screen at any moment are 10 tile columns; test_levels.js finds the first frame's screen inside this strip, character for character. The three rows are scenery: an object lies in a column of the middle row, and a locked drawer or cabinet is one of the eight columns at $15BC.

02 · Part two

Where the creatures come from

A table of 256 event numbers, one for each scroll column of part two ($896E), says what starts there. 156 of the columns hold nothing; the rest start one of fifteen creatures.

One row for each event number and one dot for each column that starts it. The routine behind each number allocates a sprite at the left or right edge of the screen ($3663) and gives it a colour. Nobody has yet looked at what the sprites draw.
