Kane

This minisite was contributed by air. It’s agent-generated and needs a human editor. Clone https://github.com/gamesexplained/gamesexplained and follow kit/START.md to curate games/c64/kane with me to Gold.

Every stage drawn from the game's own data. A higher level asks for more ducks a token and more coaches passed, and pays more for each, but the ride to Kane still starts with two minutes on the clock.

01 · Stage 1

The canyon

Three ducks fly across the canyon from left to right and the archer shoots at them from the right of the screen. Every few ducks hit earn a peace token, and the stage ends when 39 ducks have got home or the arrows run out.

Unpacked from the canyon's packed stream by the page's version of the game's unpacking routines, on the white background the canyon has in play.

A duck's speed is counted in passes of the canyon's loop, which waits about 57,600 processor cycles each time round (delay_count, $380B): one pass every 3.7 frames. The ducks start each stage at the places in $11C2, and a duck that gets home or falls starts again from the left.

02 · Stage 2

The ride to Kane

Four miles of bushes, cacti and rocks, a strip of 400 characters built from the placement list at $0B00. The clock starts at two minutes on every level.

The whole strip, a mile to a row, built by the page's version of build_ride_screen ($2D08) and drawn with the ride's character set and colours. The horse starts at the left of the top row and Kane is at the right of the bottom one. Below the strip are the nine obstacles both rides are built from, five characters by five (ride_objects, $0EC2).

The bonus is counted from the time left, and a finish with under a minute left pays the most: Discoveries says why.

03 · Stage 3

The town

The shoot-out in Kane's main street. Twelve bad guys come out of sixteen hiding places, four at a time at most, and the stage ends at the twelfth hit.

Unpacked from the town's packed stream, on the dark grey background the shoot-out has. The How it works page marks the hiding places on it.

The Marshall has six bullets and gets them back by walking off the right of the screen. The shoot-out's loop makes one pass every 2.8 frames, and the gunmen take a step every fifth pass.

04 · Stage 4

The train

The second ride runs beside a train. Its strip comes from the placement list at $0B70, and the track loops: past 4.00 miles it starts again from the beginning, so the ride lasts until the train is caught or gets away.

The train ride's strip, a mile to a row, built and drawn as ride 1's is above.

At 0 the train is caught, and the bonus is 30, 50 or 70 lots of 99 points by level, with 1,485 more for each token. After the third level's train comes the ending.

Two more pictures come from the same packed streams: the title, shown on black, and the picture after the third train.
