The four stages, each drawn whole from the map, with the enemies the map sends, the mines, the checkpoints and the place where the scroll stops for the fight.

01 · The stages

Four stages on one strip of map

All four stages are parts of one long map. Each starts where the last one stopped or a few columns past it, and those few columns are never shown.

From the listing: the first column after stage_start_lo and stage_start_hi, the end at stage_end_lo and stage_end_hi, six checkpoints a stage, the mine table from stage_mine_first to stage_mine_end, the scripted enemies from stage_spawn_first to stage_spawn_end, and the difficulty's rate and cap. A screen is 40 columns.

The screen scrolls only forward. A stage ends when the column at the right edge of the screen reaches the stage's end column; then the alarm sounds and the fight starts. A death restarts play 40 columns, one screen, before the last checkpoint passed, so the checkpoint is at the right edge. On the first three stages the sixth checkpoint lies past the stage's end, where the scroll never gets, so a death in their fights goes back to the fifth.

02 · Stage 1

The Missile Base

Brick walls, iron girders and missiles. The map sends only five enemies of its own here: four white soldiers who each carry a flame thrower, and a grenade thrower. The rest come from the five lanes. At the end a lorry drives across, and then eighteen soldiers and kickers come from the right.

03 · Stage 2

The Harbour

Ships, warehouses and cranes, on characters swapped in for this stage. Seven of the map's sixteen enemies here are bazooka men lying in wait; three white soldiers carry bazookas, and two paratroopers drift down. The fight is the dog handler and his eighteen dogs.

04 · Stage 3

The Bridge

Aeroplanes on a runway and their hangars, with a character set, tiles and tile colours all of its own. It is the longest stage with the Prison Camp, and the map sends 22 enemies, seven of them grenade throwers. Three helicopters end it.

05 · Stage 4

The Prison Camp

Snowy roofs, barred gates and brick walls, swapped in over the Bridge's graphics. The map sends 17 enemies, five of them crawlers. The fight brings eighteen enemies along the bottom floor from both sides in turn, and after it the prisoners go free.

The strip stops one column short of the stage's end column. That last column's two tiles are numbers the tile table does not reach, and the game reads their characters from the video chip's registers. The column is never seen: the screen's right-hand column is hidden while the screen scrolls.
